The packing list you only write once

Most packing lists are rewritten from scratch for every trip. Here's how to build one you can reuse, keep under the airline's weight limit, and adapt for each trip, and how RPlan's packing library does it.

Packing lists have a short life. You write one the night before, tick most of it off, and lose it. For the next trip you start again, and forget the adapter again.

Most of what you pack is the same every time. The passport, the chargers, the wash bag, the walking shoes. What changes is a handful of things for the place and the season.

What a reusable list needs

  • A library, not a list. Everything you might take, written once.
  • Bags. Knowing which bag something is in matters at the airport, when only one of them goes in the cabin.
  • Weights. Budget airlines weigh hand luggage. Knowing your carry-on is 2.85 kg before you leave home beats repacking at the gate.
  • Per-trip changes that don't spoil the library. The swimwear goes for a beach week. That shouldn't mean taking it out of your city-break bag for good.

How RPlan's packing works

Your packing library

The Packing page is your library: your items on one side, your bags on the other. Each item has an icon, a weight and a category. Drag items into bags, or use the Pack menu on any item. Search, filter to what isn't in a bag yet, and sort by weight to find what's heaviest.

The packing library
Fifteen items across two bags, and a bar showing where the weight goes.

The bar at the top shows where the weight is going by category. When clothing is half your load, you know what to cut.

Each trip takes its bags

On a trip's Packing tab, choose the bags that are going. Each one arrives with the items it holds in your library, and its weight is totalled. Add or remove items for this trip and the change stays with this trip. Your library is untouched for next time.

The bags on a trip, with their weights
The daypack is 1.14 kg and the carry-on 2.85 kg, before you've touched a set of scales.

When you're packing, tick things off as they go in. The trip page shows how many bags are packed, so anyone else on the trip can see how you're getting on (if you've let them see the packing).

Built for the next trip

The second time you plan a trip, packing is choosing bags and changing a few things. By the third, you'll wonder why you ever wrote a list from scratch.

A starter list worth copying

  • Documents: passport, driving licence, insurance details, booking references (or just the trip in RPlan).
  • Electronics: phone charger, power adapter, power bank, headphones.
  • Health: plasters, painkillers, any prescriptions.
  • Toiletries: wash bag, sun cream.
  • Clothing: a layer more than you think, and shoes you've already walked in.

Put it in once, sort it into bags, and let every trip start from it. Your first trip is free.
